Picture Perfect Lighting is the final corner in the triangle of books in this series, which includes Picture Perfect Practice and Picture Perfect Posing.

With a new publisher, Roberto Valenzeula has produced a photography book with an innovative design element – a fold out cover with the pertinent details printed on it, so that you can easily refer to them as you read the book. It really helps, because this is an educational resource that is heavy on education. So, this is where you’ll find the five behaviours of light, the top 10 circumstantial light elements and the lighting benchmark test.

Chapters include important subjects to consider, including : prioritise a lighting vision over a lighting style, implementing circumstantial light and advanced flash techniques.

The third chapter on the five key behaviours of light is probably the most important in the book, and certainly the most technical, taking in the science behind light in order to gain a true understanding of how light behaves and influences photographs. Grasping the concepts here is vital if you’re to make the most of the rest of the book.

There’s a foreword by Valenzuela’s long-time friend Jerry Ghionis who describes him as a professional student of life – relentless about learning and passionate about the learning process. And this is relevant, because the book is very much a learning process and it takes time to develop your practice and master what is taught here.

Written in Valenzeula’s engaging style, it’s a joy to read and there’s something to learn on every single page.
