Swan Lake [HD]

Brazilian Principal dancer Thiago Soares proposed to his fellow principal dancer, Argentinean Marianela Nuñez, on the Royal Opera House stage after Sleeping Beauty’s curtain call in 2006.  Since then, they have been so busy thrilling audiences with their onstage romance, that they haven’t had time to get married. And, just as Rudolph Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn brought their own thrilling chemistry to the roles of Prince Siegfried and Odette/Odile last century, Nunez and Soares’ enchanting connection enticed huge crowds when they appeared in The Royal Opera House production of Swan Lake in 2009.

As the couple revives the same magical partnership in Covent Garden this March, Sky Arts presents Anthony Dowell’s glamorous production from 2009. Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece beautifully unfolds against a spectacular Fabergé-inspired Palace Ballroom and a haunting moonlit lake, and is made all the more fascinating by the principal dancers’ real-life love.

Dance Dance Dance [HD]

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips presents stunning specially commissioned dances from some of the country’s fines troupes.

Wayne Eagling choreographs a new and modern prelude to Giselle for English National Ballet. He believes that Rachmaninov’s classic piece requires constant reinterpretation and his version of the dance uses ten male dancers making a radical break from the traditional choreography designed primarily for female roles. Featuring Vadim Muntagirov and Daria Klimetová, ENB also perform one of the most famous extracts from Swan Lake – the dramatic Black Swan Pas de Deux.

La Bayadère [HD]

Three of the Royal Ballet’s best dancers, Tamara Rojo, Carlos Acosta and Marianela Nuñez, take to the Covent Garden stage for Maurius Pepita’s classic dance of love, murder and vengeful judgement by the gods. Set in legendary India, La Bayadère tells the story of warrior Solor’s love for Nikiya, a beautiful temple dancer. Eager to get her claws into Solor, Gamzatti, the seductive evil daughter of the Rajah, sends a basket of flowers to Nikiya containing a poisonous snake. Facing death, Nikiya is offered an antidote from the seedy High Brahmin in exchange for pledging her love to him. But she remains true to her heart and dies.

The scene which follows is one of the most famous of all ballets, The Kingdom Of The Shades. An excellent opportunity to showcase the brilliance of the corps de ballet, Solor seeks comfort in opium which sends him into a trance where he sees multiple images of Nikiya dancing.

Rojo, Acosta and Nunez star as the three points of the ballet’s love triangle with Acosta possessing the stage as the brave warrior struggling between his love for Nikiya and Gamzatti’s allure. Rojo and Nunez also bring great emotion to the performance, building up to the god’s destructive climax when the temple collapses, burying Solor and Gamzatti as their hands are joined together in marriage.
