Evelyn Hart Returns to Stage in Layered, Evocative Ballet

Choreographed by James Kudelka and scored by Claudio Monteverdi’s “Vespers”, Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB)’s Vespers is a dramatic ballet in two parts. This World Premiere is a triumph of the creative process and a collaboration between choreographer, music, and dancers.  Vespers runs from May 10-14 at the Centennial Concert Hall and features the iconic Evelyn Hart in a role created specifically for her.

Hart, a Companion of the Order of Canada and recipient of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Reward, was a RWB Company dancer for over 30 years and is thrilled to perform with the Company.

“Being back in Winnipeg is amazingly comfortable—it’s great to be part of the Company, feeling the comradery with dancers as we work towards a common goal,” says Hart.   “It is such a gift to be an expressive artist and to be given the opportunity to share how you feel—that is what I look forward to the most.”

Kudelka, renowned Canadian choreographer, didn’t want to impose a narrative on the Company, but rather create a piece in a collaborative manner. A strong believer in the creative process, Kudelka, along with the Vespers creative team, successfully encapsulated the talent of the RWB while taking audiences on an emotional exploration of humans’ relationship with the natural world.

The RWB gratefully acknowledges The Bank of Montreal (BMO) for their sponsorship of Vespers.

“We have a longstanding partnership with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and are pleased to support one of the country’s most acclaimed ballet companies,” said John MacAulay, Senior Vice President of Prairies Central Canada Division, BMO Bank of Montreal. “There is so much talent within Canada’s performing arts, and the RWB specifically, so we are excited to help showcase that to the Winnipeg community with the premiere of Vespers. ”

Vespers is alive with vibrant character, colour and texture with all the richness of a renaissance painting.

Collaborating with Kudelka is an esteemed creative team: Denis Lavoie (costume design), Karen Rodd (animal masks), Michael Mazzola (lighting design), and Nick Blais (set design).
