Greta Hodgkinson Celebrates 20th Anniversary in Jerome Robbins’ Other Dances
June 15 – 19, 2011

April 5, 2011… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that Jerome RobbinsOther Dances has been added to the summer mixed programme to celebrate Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson’s 20th anniversary with the company. Other Dances will be presented with George Balanchine’s Mozartiana and Twyla Tharp’s In The Upper Room June 15 – 19, 2011 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Ms. Hodgkinson performs Other Dances with fellow Principal Dancer Zdenek Konvalina. Originally created for Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov in 1976, this exquisite pas de deux is set to four mazurkas and one waltz by Chopin and pays homage to the fluidity of classical ballet technique through its simplicity and virtuosity.

Mozartiana was George Balanchine’s second ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s homage to Mozart and is one of the last ballets he created before his death. In The Upper Room is quintessential Twyla Tharp, set to a mesmerizing score by Philip Glass, the work weds speed and shapeliness, vigor and intricacy in an unforgettable choreographic vision.
