National Ballet of Canada adds The Man in Black to Western Canada Tour

James Kudelka’s The Man in Black added to the Western Canada Tour
September 15 – October 4, 2011

July 7, 2011… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that James Kudelka’s The Man in Black has been added to the Western Canada tour. The Man in Black will be presented along with William Forsythe’s the second detail, Jerome RobbinsOther Dances and Crystal Pite’s Emergence in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Winnipeg.

James Kudelka’s The Man in Black was originally commissioned by BalletMet Columbus and premiered on April 23, 2010. The work is a celebration of American working-class grit and of the man whose voice embodied it so movingly, Johnny Cash. Six Cash songs – all covers from the later part of his career – are given visual resonance in a suite of dances for an ensemble of three men and a woman, all in cowboy boots. “Constructed from what appear to be simple movements and set to six covers sung by Johnny Cash, “Black” keeps the dancers in constant motion. It’s devoid of frills yet as stark and moving as Cash’s voice itself.” Columbus Alive, 2010.

James Kudelka is a former Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada and acknowledged as one of North America’s most innovative choreographers. Mr. Kudelka’s work covers an impressive range, from virtuoso pas de deux, through large-scale and always arresting adaptations of such classics as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Cinderella, to boldly innovative creative collaborations with dancers, designers and musicians.
