Mariinsky Ballet | Jewels DVD
Having just spent an hour and a half immersed in utterly, thoroughly enchanting gorgeousness, I have one thing to say : you just can’t be without this DVD recording of the Mariinsky’s Jewels by George Balanchine. The Mariinsky Orchestra handle the music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky magnificently. The Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg- crystal chandeliers and burnished golden hues positively humming over the screen will entice you!
This is the Mariinsky label’s first DVD & Blu-ray release, and from the jewels themselves, sparkling decorously at the start of each section (Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds) to the sumptuous recording and stupendous dancing – it’s 94 minutes of heaven on earth. There’s even a ginger haired Diamond!
Starring Ulyana Lopatkina, Igor Zelensky, Irina Golub (wickedly on the money), Andrian Fadeyev and Zhanna Ayupova, this recording is available in several formats including Blu-ray. You’ll also get an interview with Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre.
If you watch in Blu-ray, as I did, which is a brutally unforgiving medium especially for hard-working ballet dancers, they stand out in all their glory and it’s only really the floor that doesn’t scrub up well. There is the odd questionable camera angle but otherwise it’s truly a masterpiece. Literally, you can’t be without it. Hurry!
