Ballet News | Mouse King Media releases The Nutcracker Musical Storybook App

The Nutcracker

It’s pretty rare for me to recommend an App based on anything to do with ballet, but The Nutcracker Musical Storybook App is so adorable and well crafted that I just have to!

What’s so great about it ? It’s beautifully made for starters. London-based fine artist Yoko Tanaka hand-painted each of the animated images for the 25 chapters of the storybook. You’ve got to laugh when you touch the cats and they purr (though at first I admit I thought they were snoring!).  Touch the Nutcracker and …. well, you’ll see!

A total of 27 fully orchestrated musical arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s score are included : the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Waltz of the Flowers, Trepak, Nutcracker March, Chinese Dance and many other favorites.  Numerous interactive touch-sensitive special effects sounds can be discovered within the chapters – and they take some discovering so it’s not one view and that’s it, like so many Apps.

The Nutcracker

The character dances are interpreted in a very unusual way – we’re not talking ballet exactly here – but they are quirky and highly watchable.  For example in the Spanish dance, it’s the bull who is playing the guitar.  The Nutcracker story is based on the American productions, with Mother Ginger, Candy Canes, Marzipan et al, and when Clara and The Nutcracker Prince arrive at the Kingdom of Sweets (in a nutshell boat pulled by dolphins – why not ? – they are greeted by waving, smiling gingerbread men bearing cupcakes. I did miss the Snowflakes and thought that an omission that really should be recified with the next edition upgrade.  It’s one of the most iconic scenes of the ballet and it really must be there. Also in the scene where Clara shrinks I had a minor quibble when she momentarily appeared without a hand, but otherwise it’s delightful from start to finish and would make a thoughtful and inexpensive Christmas present.

There are two viewing modes – movie and storybook. With the storybook mode, you touch the tree decorations and the story comes to life.  In movie mode the App does all the work for you.

The App’s creators said “this unique app was created for children and adults alike as an entertaining and educational introduction to the story and music of The Nutcracker Ballet.  It’s usually a child’s first visit to a ballet so we wanted to enhance that experience for all families.”
